La Madeleine de Proust: Revisited

As much as a sociology project, as a photography one, the below collection of images illustrates a re-creation of the taste that brings us back to our childhood. “La madeleine de Proust” is an expression taken from Marcel Proust’s novel “In search of lost time”, and has become symbolic for everything which makes us dive back in our childhood in a manner so intense that we can touch and feel the exact scene, which we remember. Psychology research has shown that our memory is very strongly impressed by sense (touch, feel, smell, sound), which allows it to imprint information deep in our subconscious. Food is one thing that creates a strong sensory reaction and as such it can be a great candidate for “passage” between the present moment and the past.

This is an ongoing project, based on data collected from more than 50 individuals, from different ages and origins. Its goal of this study is to show the impact that food has on us and the way it triggers back emotions, wether positive or negative ones.
